Walking Liberty was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. His monogram, AW, appears on the tip of the tail feathers. In 1916, the mintmarks appeared on the obverse, below the motto. 1917 was a transitional year in which the mintmarks appeared on either the obverse or reverse. From that point forward, mintmarks appeared on the reverse.
Key dates: 1921, 1921-D (had the lowest mintage of the series), 1938-D
Semi- key dates: 1916, 1916D, 1916S, 1917D (mintmark on observe), 1917S (mintmark on obverse), 1919, 1919D, 1919S, 1921S. Pieces dated 1928 D are counterfeit, Since 1986, Weinman's obverse design has been used as the obverse design for the American Silver Eagle bullion coin.
The United States Mint 2015 announced plans to restrike for collectors, in gold, the three silver coins first issued in 1916. The gold version of the Walking Liberty half a dollar, containing a half ounce of gold and struck at the West Point Mint, went on sale to the public on November 17, 2016. Varieties: The rarest of all varieties is a very strong obverse doubled die on a 1936 (P); Rare repunched mintmark, hand-engraved initials on a 1944D; Missing initials on a 1945 (P) and other dates; Inverted S mintmark on a 1944 S coin.
